What will 2020 number plates be?
25th March 2020What will the reg plate be in 2020?
The new 2020 registration plates are released in March 2020 and cover any vehicles which are registered between March 2020 and August 2020. Registrations which are released from March 1 2020, will now have '20' as the age identifier in the centre of the number plate. For example, your registration plate would read: XX20 XXX.
How do number plates work?
Since the current number plate system was first introduced in September 2001, the format is two letters, followed by two numbers, then three more letters. The first registration for this new format back in September 2001 would have been: XX51 XXX.
The age identifiers, which are the two numbers in the middle of the number plate, let you know the age of the vehicle. This will tell you the six-month period of which year the vehicle was first registered.
If your vehicle was registered between March and August of any year, the age identifier will follow the last two digits of the year the vehicle was registered. For example, if your car is registered between March and August in 2010, the age identifier would be 10.
However, for cars registered between September and February 2010, the age identifier would be 60 - to get this new age identifier the DVLA add 50 to the last two digits of the year of registration. For example, a car produced in November 2005 would have XX56 XXX as the age identifier on the number plate and a car produced in November 2016 would have XX66 XXX as the age identifier.
When do number plates change?
Number plates change on a bi-yearly basis. New number plates for any given year are released in March and September.
